Seriously. Just as Michael Pollan talks about voting with your fork, we need to think about voting with our headphones if we want quality musicians to keep making quality music on a large scale. E-40 is as large as they come, and this double album is huge. Both Graveyard Shift and Overtime Shift are awesome, but if you’re only gonna buy one, I’d recommend Overtime Shift.
“The Vent,” by Big K.R.I.T. Off of Return of 4Eva. Today has been a little overwhelming for me: I stayed off the internets for 4 days and returned to Big K.R.I.T., Rich Boy, an insane Mekanix/Mike Rimzo compilation, and even more MondreM.A.N. Maybe cuz I’m dealing with (relationship) stuff, or maybe just cuz I’m generally over-emotional and affected by music, but this song has me kinda choked up (NHJIC).
French hip hop blog Pure Baking Soda drops a 37-track compilation of production by Bay Area production duo The Mekanix, and San Jose’s Mike Rimzo, creators of Livewire’s futuristic mobb sound (that also doubles as a great J. Stalin primer).
Livewire’s music represents the other tract Bay artists took after hyphy music burned itself out — going back to the mobstability (no Twista) that originated with the Bay’s rap progenitors like 40, C-Bo, $hort, and RBL Posse. At times generic to a fault, J. Stalin’s best work often comes underpinned by the 80’s Baby sonics of Kenny Tweed and Tha Dotrix, so you’re in good hands here.

I’ve been looking for a Mekanix best of for a while now. This should suffice for the time being.
Big thanks to Spaceage for spotting this and even bigger thanks to Pure Baking Soda for compiling this.
Space Age Hustle provides a nice little interview with Clams Casino. Among other things, I learned he’s a physical therapy student, which I wouldn’t have suspected (not that I know the guy). I also like that it elaborates on something that I was curious about after reading Brandon Soderberg’s interview with Mr. Casino: he makes beats as a hobby, and he does it because he loves it and he’s damn good at it, but he doesn’t plan on making a career of it. I think some money/business impacts many artists’ work, and others are able to overcome this pressure relatively well. But it sounds like he’s consciously choosing to avoid the issue altogether. And I guess he must really like physical therapy.
With the release of his appropriately titled Clams Casino Instrumentals mixtape, New Jersey producer Clams Casino suddenly found his genre-bending atmospheric boom bap (which had, prior to then, served mostly as a sonic playground for the heretical boasts of Lil B) in the (Internet…
I’ve been waiting for a new installment. No letdown here. Some highlights:
hit em up over tkeover? please . nas vs jay was created in a boardroom meeting.
All rap was created in a boardroom meeting. By racists. In you opinion besides his impeccable beat selection what is it about Rawse that draws people in?

“So Many Animals,” by the Jacka and Freeway featuring Fed-X. Not sure where this is from, but maybe even a throwaway from Tear Gas.
